PHINIX: CACTUS AND INDIANS

Phoenix is the capital of the state of Arizona and the 6th most populous city in the United States. Phoenix is located on a plain surrounded by mountains - in fact, in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. And this desert is worth seeing!
In the vicinity of Phoenix, there are about 40 hiking trails for mountain walks of varying degrees of difficulty. Download maps and choose the route you like. Don't forget that this is a real desert: you should always have water, sunscreen and something to protect your head from the white sun. Relatively easy trails in Deem Hill Park, Lookout Mountain, (it also offers excellent views) and Papago Park. If, on the contrary, you need challenges and achievements, climb to the top of Pietsewa Peak. Well, the most famous mountain in the area is Camelback Mountain (5700 N. Echo Canyon Parkway). Summit trails are considered challenging and suitable for experienced hikers, while beginners can choose the trail that goes around the mountain.

Be sure to check out the Heard Museum (2301 North Central Avenue). Firstly, it is a very pleasant place in itself: a beautiful building with a colonnade and a cool courtyard, with fountains and palm trees. The museum itself began as a private collection of people passionate about aboriginal cultures: the couple Dwight and Maie Heard traveled around the world until their friends told them their home collection was more like a museum - and in 1929 the museum was founded. Now the exposition hosts free excursions with stories about different indigenous tribes of this area, their history and traditions. You can see plenty of carpets, decorations, sculptures, wicker baskets - and listen to stories about this magical culture, when a simple triangle ornament on a bowl formed clouds, rain, mountains, desert - in general, the whole world. This museum contains one of the world's largest collections of ritual Kachin dolls - they can be viewed endlessly and fantasized about which aliens from outer space they look like (bonus for Belarusians - you can find Patsu-Vatsu). Also pay attention to the carpets of the early 20th century - they are no longer just traditional ornaments, but also trains, cars and shops. Indigenous peoples embroidered what they saw.Temporary exhibitions are also held in the museum - both by contemporary artists and such world celebrities as Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Finally, there is a great souvenir shop: you can buy yourself a real dream catcher, a set of postcards with drawings of Indians, a collection of Indian myths or a self-study book of the Navajo language. Don't forget to check out the local art gallery for stunning silver and turquoise jewelry, ceramics and textiles with Indian designs. All the work is done by modern Indians - this craft is often their main source of income now, so you can support modern Indian art. The museum is open from 9.30 to 17.00, the ticket costs $ 7.5-18.

Musical Instrument Museum (4725 E. Mayo Blvd) - Another cool museum in Phoenix with a huge collection of all sorts of music extraction tools. You can listen to instruments, some can be played, you can admire the guitars played by Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, or you can get to a live concert, from jazz and folk to the classics. Here you can find one instrument from every country in the world. Yes, there are also from Belarus. What exactly? Come check it out for $ 10-27.Phoenix Art Museum (1625 N. Central Ave) is one of the largest art museums in the southwestern United States. Here you will find a huge collection of modernist and contemporary art from Europe, Asia, Latin America, and of course the USA. The museum's "trick" is a center of contemporary photography with excellent thematic exhibitions and lectures, as well as a collection dedicated to fashion and clothing design. The ticket costs $ 18, but if you come on Wednesday from 18.00 to 21.00 - admission for a free donation.

Desert Botanical Garden (1201 N. Galvin Parkway). Before the scorching summer comes, the desert is the kingdom of life. Around the giant cacti - saguars. They can be used to determine age: if a cactus has two or more processes, it is more than 150 years old. Gradually, its trunk becomes lignified, it becomes a real tree: birds make hollows in it and live there. In general, this is a luxurious place for lovers of cacti and succulents - they are here of all shapes and at the same time of such gigantic sizes that it becomes embarrassing for your modest home cactus. Again, don't pass by the souvenir shop: you can get hold of a T-shirt or dishes with a beautiful botanical print, or, of course, a local cactus in a fashionable polygonal pot. The botanical garden has its own cafe, which cooks from local and seasonal products, and there are often various excursions and master classes - from a workshop on botanical photography to a lecture on gardening. There are also contemporary art exhibitions and even nighttime flashlight tours. Check the schedule. The Botanical Garden is open from 7.00 to 20.00, tickets are $ 13-25.

By the way, if you especially like saguaro cacti, you can arrange a separate excursion to the National Park dedicated exclusively to them - Saguaro National Park.
Heritage Square (113 N. Sixth St.). The park, founded at the end of the 19th century, has now become a place for all kinds of city events - festivals, exhibitions and open lectures (check the schedule here). There are also several restaurants and manufacturing workshops where you can try to create things with your own hands as they did two hundred years ago - from fabric to food. If museum shops weren't enough for you, head to Old Town Scottsdale (4200 N. Scottsdale Road Scottsdale) for souvenirs, an area with art galleries and souvenir shops.
